Still Life Onion Reflection:
1. Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
I tried the techniques of blending charcoal and shadow. I don't think I mastered either of these techniques as I struggled with both. However, it was easier for me to create a shadow than a blend.
2. How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists?
I drew inspiration from other artist's techniques by observing the way they created the shadow in their drawings and the way they blended the charcoal in the background. I also relied on their techniques to figure out how to draw the correct lines to create perspective. By watching my fellow classmates, I was able to derive meaning of the onion drawing and appreciate the complex way the varying values subtly contribute to its appearance. My classmates were the artists who helped me the most because they guided me through the process and allowed me to reference their work.
3. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements.
My work has evolved in terms of the detail I have on the onions. I started out with two circles and was able to evolve those circles into shapes that somewhat resemble onions. I also decided to shade the background of my drawing before perfecting the bag because I knew I didn't have enough time to finish the entire drawing and wanted to at least have present the key components. It was important to me that I added shading to the background of my drawing because it added the compositional elements of value and space.
4. If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time?
I would re-do my bag because I don't think it adequately portrays the positioning of the onions and is flat rather than multi-dimensional. Next time, I would spend more time on the lines I draw for the bag and adjust them more carefully to ensure I produced a more life-like image.
5. Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread?
This is my first piece in this class so it doesn't link to others yet.
